Wig Tips for Female Impersonators
Karla's Personal Suggestions!

Although many club performers wear their own natuaral hair, many still rely on wigs and hairpieces. I've put together some of my own personal tips for entertainers. These also apply to Cross Dressers and Transgendered individuals.

Please don't wear a dull or dirty wig on stage! Wash your wigs regularly. Washing is particularly important if you're a peformer, or do much "clubbing." Wigs will pick up and retain bar smoke and other foul smells. Many a next day, I've sniffed the wig I wore and said, "Yuck! What's that awful stink?"

If you can't do it yourself, pay someone to style them. Taking them out of the box (or off the stand) and shaking them, just won't do.

If you use a wig cap, remember to smooth out the lumps of your natural hair, your wig will sit better.

Wear your wig a bit towards the rear of your head, it looks silly, on a man, if you have your wig sitting too far forward.

Try to match your natural hair color with your wig, that way you can pull your natural hair through it, and blend it in, for a more natural appearance. Note: You can always use a colored hairspray (it'll wash out) on you own hair, and reasonably match your wig's color.

Don't buy "cheap" wigs, and always make sure they have adjustment tabs.

By the way, try to wear a different wig for each number, it adds to the allure.

I suggest you use a water-based hair spray. It'll wash out when you clean your wig. On a synthetic wig, excessive use of spray may dull or straighten the fiber. I can't stress enough: Don't brush or comb it while its wet with spray!

If your wig becomes dull after washing, use a synthetic wig conditioner or wig lusterizer for natural and synthetic fibers. This will add some life to a dull wig.

How long your wig lasts depends on how often (and under what conditions) you wear it. If you are (probably) in a smoke or hostile environment, or if you wear the same wig all the time, your wig may last up to 6 months (with basic care). For the club scene, as I mentioned before, I suggest you have more than one and rotate them. Besides, its more fun to have a bunch!
